The Vibrio fischeri-Euprymna scolopes light organ association: current ecological paradigms

Article Abstract:

A study of the extent to which the Vibrio fischeri population can influence, or be influenced by, its existence in symbiotic niches focuses on the light organ association between V. fischeri and the bobtail sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopes. In some habitats, this ecological relationship appears to be a dominant factor in controlling its abundance and distribution. The ecological patterns of other marine bacteria may also be ruled by an association with a plant or animal host.

Population dynamics of Vibrio fischeri during infection of Euprymna scolopes

Article Abstract:

The population dynamics of Vibrio fischeri during colonization reveal that during early stages of colonization only a few bacteria associate with symbiotic tissue when squids are exposed to natural population levels of V. fischeri. However, on a long-term the size of the inoculum determines the population recovered from individual symbiotic organ.

Vibrio fischeri (sigma)(super 54) controls motility, biofilm formation, luminescence, and colonization

Article Abstract:

Putative Vibrio fischeri rpoN gene, which encodes (sigma) (super 54) and controls motility, biofilm development, bioluminescence and colonization, is described. The symbiotic association of V. fischeri with juveniles of the squid Euprymna scolopes could be initiated by rpoN.
