Families of transmembrane transporters selective for amino acids and their derivatives

Article Abstract:

This review describes 21 proton-motive-force-driven transmembrane carriers involved in the transportation of amino acids, small amines, polyamines, amides and peptides across cell membranes of the living cells. Results suggest that 11 of the 21 carriers occur in bacteria and archaea, 2 are restricted to eukaryotes and the rest occur ubiquitously.

The amino acid/polyamine/organocation (APC) superfamily of transporters specific for amino acids, polyamines and organocations

Article Abstract:

Research reveals 175 amino acid/polyamine/organocation superfamily of integral membrane proteins that mediate amino acid, polyamines and organocations transport acros cell membranes. Data indicate that majority of them exhibit uniform topology with 10 to 14 transmembrane alpha-helical spanners in a polypeptide chain.

TRAP transporters: an ancient family of extracytoplsmic solute-receptor-dependent secondary active transporters

Article Abstract:

Phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that tripartite ATP-independent periplasmic transporters (TRAP-T) systems probably evolved from a common ancestral transporter. TRAP-T from Rhodobacter capsulatus exhibit 3 C(sub)4-dicarboxylate specific proteins and homologues of these are identified in other bacteria and in archaea.
