The cancer-fighting teen

Article Abstract:

A 14-year-old girl Shivani Sud, winner of $50,000 fellowship from the Davidson Institute, initially had trouble finding a scientific advisor to pursue her research in cancer as no one was willing to trust an eighth grader. She got her first chance to work with a researcher at Temple University lab to develop a new way to deliver drugs to cancer cells, where she worked to clone and test a vector that encoded the nuclear localization signal of HIV-1 tat, a murine Igk secretion chain, and green fluorescent protein.

Article Abstract:

George Usher, CEO of Polydex teamed up with CONRAD, a Virginia-based nonprofit dedicated to finding new ways to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections in developing countries funded by Gates Foundation and USAID. CONRAD is helping Polydex to develop Ushercell, its cellulose-dextran-based microbicidal prophylactic by contributing $40 million towards its development, trial monitoring, and manufacturing in Phase III trials in India and Africa.

When biodiversity makes you sick

Article Abstract:

A group of Italian researchers contracted histoplasmosis during their expedition to the Otonga rainforest in search of new undiscovered species. The expedition was organized through the World Biodiversity Association and the team has discovered more than 50 new taxa, which will be compiled into a monograph called Biodiversity South America I in September 2007.
