The neuron-specific kinesin superfamily protein KIF1A is a unique monomeric motor for anterograde axonal transport of synaptic vesicle precursors

Article Abstract:

Biochemical and biophysical analyses of KIF1A, a class of kinesin superfamily proteins, revealed a monomeric, globular molecule with an anterograde motor velocity of 1.2 micrometer/second. Analysis of membranous organelles isolated from the axon indicated KIF1A's association with organelles containing synaptic vesicle proteins. However, these organelles contained various SV proteins and not the known anterograde proteins. This suggests that the membrane proteins are sorted into different transport organelles and are transported by specific motor proteins through the axon.

KIF4 motor regulates activity-dependent neuronal survival by suppressing PARP-1 enzymatic activity

Article Abstract:

Apoptosis is a physiological process that controls the final numbers of neurons in brain development, and the activity-dependent prevention of apoptosis in juvenile neurons is regulated by kinesin superfamily protein 4 (KIF4), a microtubule-based molecular motor. It is suggested that KIF4 controls the activity-dependent survival of postmitotic neurons by regulating Polymerase-1 (PARP-1) activity in brain development.

Mechanism of nodal flow: A conserved symmetry breaking event in left-right axis determination

Article Abstract:

Rabbit and medakafish embryos exhibit a leftward fluid flow in their ventral nodes. This leftward flow might produce asymmetric distribution of exogenously introduced proteins, suggesting morphogen gradients as a subsequent mechanism of left-right axis determination.
