The slow road to the eukaryotic genome

Article Abstract:

The evidence for the lateral gene transfer scenario is assessed by using phylogenetic studies and reconstructions of ancestral first appearances of genes on the prokaryotic phylogeny. The various genes making up the eukaryotic mosaic have arisen at different times and in diverse lineages on the prokaryotic tree and are unavailable in a single lineage.

Nucleomorph genomes: Structure, function, origin and evolution

Article Abstract:

The structure, function, origin, and evolution of cryptomonad and chlorarachniophyte nucleomorph genomes are discussed. The reasons for the persistence of the nucleomorphs in cryptomonads and chlororachniophytes but their absence in all other algae with plastids of secondary endosymbiotic origin are analyzed.

Hypothesis: Transcript-templated repair of DNA double-strand breaks

Article Abstract:

Homology directed repair (HDR) and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) are the two mechanisms for repairing DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). The service of RNA transcripts as templates for homology directed repair (HDR) is discussed.
