The transfer of left-right positional information during chick embryogenesis

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the transfer of left-right positional information that leads to left-sided expression of asymmetric genes at Hensen's node during chick embryogenesis. Gene expression following reorientation of the node showed asymmetry was instructed by adjacent tissue, therfore, left-right information originates outside the node. It was found that loss of nodal expression in the presence of blocking antibodies confirms that Sonic hedgehog is the key signal conveying left-right information from the node.

Antagonistic signaling by Caronte (ital), a novel Cerberus (ital)-related gene, establishes left-right asymmetric gene expression

Article Abstract:

Antagonistic signaling by Caronte (Car) (ital), a novel Cerberus (ital)-related gene, is discussed. The signals establish left-right asymmetric gene expression. Car is expressed asymmetrically in the left paraxial mesoderm and is a secondary signal induced by Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and repressed by Fgf8. Car misexpression is enough to activate Nodal (ital) in the lateral plate mesoderm (LPM).

Wnt-14 plays a pivotal role in inducing synovial joint formation in the developing appendicular skeleton

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the vertebrate appendicular skeleton's long bones which arise from the continuous condensations of the mesenchymal cells forming discrete elements separated by the synovial joints. Results indicate that Wnt-14 plays important role in initiating synovial joint formation in the chick limb.
