Transcription factor NF-E2 is required for platelet formation independent of the actions of thrombopoietin/MGDF in megakaryocyte development

Article Abstract:

Mice lacking p45, the hematopoietic subunit of the transcription factor NF-E2 exhibited no platelet formation within their megakaryocytes during hemorrhage. However, serum levels of thrombopoietin/megakaryocyte growth and development factor (MGDF) remained unchanged despite the absence of platelets. As promoter of the maturation and proliferation of megakaryocyte precursors, the continuous production of MGDF assures megakaryocyte development and platelet production.

The T cell leukemia oncoprotein SCL/tal-1 is essential for development of all hematopoietic lineages

Article Abstract:

The hematopoietic potential of homozygous mutant SCL/tal-1 -/- embryonic stem cells in chimeric mice is studied to define roles in other lineages. Hematopoiesis is shown to be undetectable in the absence of SCL/tal-1. This includes the generation of red cells, myeloid cells, mast cells, megakaryocetes and both T and B lymphoid cells. Such results suggest that SCL/tal-1 functions in the early stages of hematopoietic development.

Chipping away at the embryonic stem cell network

Article Abstract:

Critical transcription factors, notably OCT4, SOX2, and NANOG are necessary to maintain self-renewal and pluripotency, two properties characteristic of embryonic stem (ES) cells. The findings indicate the presence of a complex network of autoregulatory and feedward loops in human ES cells.
