Transmitting genetic risk information in families: attitudes about disclosing the identity of relatives

Article Abstract:

Attitudes about disclosing identities of relatives so that genetic risk information can be transmitted to family members are discussed based on a questionnaire study of Danish patients with alpha(sub.1)-antitrypsin deficiency A1AD, family members of those patients, and a control group. Findings suggest that telling all relatives about the disorder and about who is actually ill should be the rule in general and that genetic counselors should ask identities of relatives when disability can be prevented by careful management and/or a lifestyle change. It seems women are less likely to disclose identities of siblings.

Fetal DNA in maternal plasma: the plot thickens and the placental barrier thins

Article Abstract:

New methods show fetal DNA in maternal plasma. It appears that the placental barrier is not as impenetrable has had been supposed. Intact fetal cells were looked at in prior studies. Using a single-copy Y chromosome-specific sequence and real-time quantitative PCR assay showed very different results. Now the implications of extensive exposure of the mother to fetal DNA will have to be investigated.
