Ubiquity and diversity of dissimilatory (per)chlorate-reducing bacteria

Article Abstract:

Results of a study show dissimilatory reduction of (per)chlorate is much more widespread and diverse than had been supposed. The number of dissimilatory (per)chlorate-reducing bacteria (CIRB) has been determined in a wide variety of environments in a study of ubiquity and diversity of such organisms. Thirteen new CIRB were isolated, and several of the isolates represent new genera in the Proteobacteria class.

Stable isotope fractionation caused by glycyl radical enzymes during bacterial degradation of aromatic compounds

Article Abstract:

Stable isotope fractionation is studied during the degradation of m-xylene, o-xylene, m-cresol, and p-cresol with two pure cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Degradation of all four compounds is initiated by a fumarate addition reaction by a glycyl radican enzyme, analogous to the well-studied benzylsuccinate synthase reaction in toluene degradation.
