Uptake of benzoic acid and chloro-substituted benzoic acids by Alcaligenes denitrificans BRI 3010 and BRI 6011

Article Abstract:

The uptake of benzoic acid into Alcaligenes denitrificans BRI 3010 and BRI 6011 cells involves carriers and shows saturation kinetics. The transport is an active process, as the acid in the cells is concentrated against a gradient. BRI 3010 shows monophasic saturation kinetics, while BRI 6011 shows biphasic saturation kinetics. The uptake is suppressed by the protonophore TCS, the respiratory inhibitor KCN, and chlorobenzoic acids and structurally similar compounds. The uptake of mono- and di-chlorobenzoic acid isomers is by passive diffusion through the cell membranes.

Characterization of the prokaryotic diversity in cold saline perennial springs of the Canadian high arctic

Article Abstract:

The survey conducted about the microbial diversity in the sediments of seven springs in the Canadian Arctic region by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and analyzing clone libraries of 16S rRNA genes amplified with Bacteria and Archaea-specific primers is presented. Results showed utilization and cycling of sulfur compounds responsible for energy production and maintenance of microbial communities in Canadian cold environments.

Benzoic acid, a weak organic acid food preservative, exerts specific effects on intracellular membrane trafficking pathways in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Article Abstract:

The effects of benzoic acid on the behavior of discrete intracellular membrane trafficking pathways in yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, including macroautophagy were analyzed. The analysis suggest that the synergism between nitrogen starvation and benzoic acid was the result of inhibition of macroautophagy by benzoic acid and that this inhibition is beneficial in the development of novel food preservation technologies.
