Role for outer membrane cytochromes OmcA and OmcB of Shewanella putrefaciens MR-1 in reduction of manganese dioxide

Article Abstract:

Research on anaerobic respiration indicates that the reduction of insoluble manganese(IV) in the gram-negative bacteria Shewanella putrefaciens MR-1 is reliant on the outer membrane cytochromes OmcA and OmcB. These cytochromes, however, are not required for the reduction of other electron acceptors such as iron(III).

Vanadium(V) reduction by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 requires menaquinone and cytochromes from the cytoplasmic and outer membranes

Article Abstract:

The metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 displays remarkable respiratory plasticity, which is reflected in the extensive number of electron transport components encoded in its genome. A variety of mutants of MR-1 are used to elucidate cell components required for V(V) reduction.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 restores menaquinone synthesis to a menaquinone-negative mutant

Article Abstract:

The mechanisms underlying the use of insoluble electron acceptors by metal-reducing bacteria, like Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 are analyzed. The quinone analysis showed that the released substance restores menaquinone (MK) synthesis in MK-negative mutant (CMA-1).
