Vernadsky's biosphere concept: an historical perspective

Article Abstract:

Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky's concept of biosphere was a strong influence on the progress of biogeochemistry in various countries including the USSR and yet has received little notice from modern scientists. Vernadsky perceived of nature on a planetary level, similarly to the concept of Gaia, though 50 years before that concept. Scientists are beginning to accept Gaia as the leading perspective and yet Vernadsky has been neglected. Some biographical information on Vernadsky is included.

The first living systems: a bioenergetic perspective

Article Abstract:

Scientific research has established that organic matter fell to earth from outer space during the Archean period and that organic molecules such as amino acids and carbohydrates were also synthesized on earth at the same time using carbon, nitrogen and sunlight. Further research is required to establish the proportion of terrestrial synthesis in relation to extraterrestrial deposits. Long-chained hydrocarbons must have existed at that time for membrane synthesis to have occurred.

Orientation and navigation: a perspective on fifty years of research

Article Abstract:

A selective and biased review was conducted on the conceptual advances and empirical results that are believed to play a vital role in setting the direction of research in animal orientation and navigation. Ornithology has also been instrumental in the study of ecology, ethology, behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. In addition, the homing and migratory behavior of birds has prompted students to seek answers to such phenomena. A history of avian research is presented.
