Visualization of Borreli burgdorferi sensu lato by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on whole-body sections of Ixodes recinus ticks and gerbil skin biopsies

Article Abstract:

Borreli burgdorferi sensu lato were to be visualized by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on whole-body sections of Ixodes recinus ticks and gerbil skin biopsies. The same sample processing was applied to skin biopsies taken from a Mongolian gerbil after an infectious tick-bite and Borrelia. Borreliae with the typical spirochaetal morphotype were visible in five of six putatively infected ticks. The technique has great potential for investigation of transmission of bacteria or other microoganisms by arthropod vectors. FISH may be suitable for detection of borreliae in clinical tissue specimens.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for direct visualization of bacteria in periapical lesions of asymptomatic root-filled teeth

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on periapical endodontic lesions of asymptomatic teeth. The ability of micro-organisms to live in these lesions has been investigated via the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization and epifluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy, and the details are reported.

In situ identification of nocardioform actinomycetes in activated sludge using fluorescent rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes

Article Abstract:

The existence and abundance of nocardioform actinomycetes in activated sludge derived from various sewage treatment plants were examined using rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes and in situ hybridization experiments. In this study, both methods were able to identify rod-shaped bacteria as well as nocardioform filaments from sludge samples. These tests can also be used fo bacterial analysis inside sludge flocs.
