When contractile proteins go bad: The sarcomere and skeletal muscle disease

Article Abstract:

The skeletal muscle diseases caused by mutation of sarcomeric proteins are reviewed with a focus on the diseases caused by the two fundamental sarcomeric proteins, actins and myosin and some possible approaches to treatment are discussed. Mutations in a large number of the protein components of the sarcomere are demonstrated to cause various skeletal and cardiac muscle diseases.

Chaperoning prions: The cellular machinery for propagating an infectious protein?

Article Abstract:

The role of molecular chaperones in yeast prion propagation is reviewed and a model that could explain the role of various classes of molecular chaperones and their co-chaperones is described. Prions could exploit the molecular chaperone machinery in the cell to ensure stable propagation of the infectious, aggregation prone form.
