Zoning out tight junctions

Article Abstract:

Studies were conducted to elucidate the importance of the Zonula Occludens (ZO) proteins in the formation of tight junction, which act as barrier to limit solute movement between adjacent epithelial cells. The findings suggest that loss of ZO scaffolds blocks tight-junction seal formation but do not affect apico-basal polarity, which is independently regulated by the polarity complexes.

Methylglyoxal modification of mSin3A links Glycolysis to Angiopoietin-2 transcription

Article Abstract:

The study report that in retinal Muller cells, increased glycolytic flux causes increased methylglyoxal modification of the corepressor mSin3A. Methylglyoxal modification of mSin3A results in increased recruitment of O-GlcNAc trransferase to an mSin3A-Sp3 complex, with consequent increased modification of Sp3 by O-linked N-acetylglucosamine.
