A clarification on conceptual and methodological issues related to the Job Characteristics Model: a reply

Article Abstract:

Several comments on the article entitled "Comparing the effects of cellular and functional manufacturing on employees' perceptions and attitudes" are viewed as incorrect, and the remarks are also considered trivial, and in some instances, they are also technical. For example, the measure of the five job characteristics by the Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS) did not restrict the study. A five-factor model, which was compatible with the supposed structure, was generated by the exploratory factor analysis of the JDS.

A clarification on conceptual and methodological issues related to the Job Characteristics Model. (comment to B.J. Tepper, S.M. Shafer, J.R. Meredith, and R. Marsh's article published in this journal, 1995, 12, 63-74)

Article Abstract:

The methodological and conceptual issues surrounding the article entitled "Comparing the effects of cellular and functional manufacturing on employees' perceptions and attitudes" are analyzed. Three conceptual issues are determined on the explanation of the Job Characteristics Model. Two methodological issues are also raised on the use of Motivating Potential Score as an aggregate measure of job enrichment, and the use of job characteristics measurement scales in the Job Diagnostic Survey.

A replication study of a theory of quality management underlying the Deming management method: insights from an Italian context

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the applicability of quality management underlying the management method proposed by W. Edwards Deming. Path analysis was carried out on secondary, plant-level information on plants in three different industries in Italy. Results indicated that the success of quality management practices correlated with the management of conflicts between values relating to quality management practices and those of the target culture.
