Fairfax & Roberts, one of Australia's oldest jewellery brands, has to face severe competition with the emergence of overseas jewellery and luxury goods brands like Gucci, Tiffany and Bulgari into Australian markets. The jewellery of Fairfax & Roberts failed to cope with the changing trends in the fashions and tastes, and the uniqueness that is demand, especially by the wealthy customers.

Page is worth an estimated $40 million, and her first Domayne store in suburban Sydney, Australia, cost about $9 million to build. Her stores are uncluttered, and do not have the traditional department store look. Page is the wife of Gerry Harvery, chairman of Harvey Norman.

Consumer confidence is very high in Australia. Consumers are spending more money on holidays, clothes and toys in 1999 compared with higher spending on groceries and eating in restaurants in 1998. Individuals who are spending cautiously numbered only 66% of consumers in 1999 compared with 72% in 1998.
