Prodigy's Homework Helper is an online database that offers newspapers, magazines and other publications at a fraction of the price charged by professional database services including Nexis, Dialog and Dow Jones News Retrieval. Homework Helper will be available for an amount just above Prodigy's monthly fee with no per-document fees. The service is aimed at children but its content and easy-to-use interface should make it attractive to adults. Homework Helper could be considered a breakthrough product because it is the first to offer a historical news database that is affordable. However, Homework Helper is not as extensive as other professional databases, offering fewer publications, especially the major ones, that are more recent. The service does have an excellent daily newspaper collection, including the Los Angeles Times and USA Today, over 500 magazines, radio transcripts and academic journals.

It is not necessary to utilize the same technological and monetary resources that many large organizations do in the construction of a Web site. Novice computer users can take advantage of a service offered by the largest three online service providers that allows members to freely use large amounts of provider space for Web composition. CompuServe provides free Web-authoring software to members, but such software is not difficult to obtain and usually offers a simplified approach to Web-page development. These services then upload the newly-created pages and assign them Web-site addresses, with America Online offering a robust 2MB per individual and CompuServe and Prodigy providing 1MB per Web site. However, CompuServe and Prodigy's advanced Web authoring tools make for more interesting Web page possibilities.

Article Abstract:

CompuServe's Wow online service provides several attractive features not offered by America Online (AOL), the largest online provider in the world. AOL is not as inexpensive an alternative as it once was, and the anonymous nature of AOL's infrastructure makes it easy for peddlers of pornography and other nefarious individuals to operate clandestinely. Wow offers an online service that is designed intentionally to offer families and children a safe haven from the more salacious elements of the Internet, and the fees are only $18 per month for unlimited access. Child users are assigned sub-accounts that access pre-approved Web sites and have E-mail accounts that can be screened by guardians. The service contains only a few drawbacks, including the lack of an Apple-compatible access route.
