A perspective from education: business ethics

Article Abstract:

Ethical maturation of business professionals is a lifelong process that begins in school and continues throughout their career. Experts and studies disagree on how ethics education influences the eventual ethical behavior of business professionals, but an effort by educators to instill students with high ethical standards is still well worth making. The contributions higher education can make to help in the ethical development of future business professionals include instructing students in a framework for moral development, and conducting their education in a climate that fosters honor and trust between fellow students and faculty. Ethical instruction in business enterprises should include: high ethical behavior by senior management to provide young professionals with suitable role models; corporate codes of conduct; and ethics training in continuing education.

Ethical and legal aspects of managing corporate cultures

Article Abstract:

This article evaluates managers' attempts to shape their corporate cultures in relation to two aspects of fairness in employment relationships: job security and equitable treatment. Both of these aspects are becoming particularly important given the revisions to the traditional employment-at will doctrine. Statements of corporate values are increasingly being recognized as creating contractual obligations, while concepts of equitable treatment have also been expanded. An appreciation of fairness principles is becoming more important to managers since courts and juries are integrating ethical and societal values into legal judgments about employment relationships.
