A weapon against bullies

Article Abstract:

The two sections of the Trade Practices Act that deal with unconscionability are section 51AA, which a general prohibition against unconscionable act, and section 51AC, focusing more specifically on supply arrangements between businesses. Unconscionable conduct, which has long been recognized as a serious problem for the economy as a whole, can be remedied by an action against the perpetrator and any other person involved in the contravention, and by obtaining compensatory orders, probation orders, community service orders and publication orders.

The trouble with price maintenance

Article Abstract:

A product may carry a statement declaring its retail price in order to maintain the prestige, which retailers ignore at the risk of being refused further supplies. Thus protecting a product's image can make it difficult for retailers who want to draw customers by offering discounts and deter buyers chasing the best price.

The emerging use of shopper dockets-petrol discounting schemes to attract Australian customers by Australian Competition & Consumer Commission is discussed. The substantial benefits derived from these schemes for Australian consumers are mentioned.
