ATI set to announce agreement to supply cable-TV box chips

Article Abstract:

ATI Technologies Inc. is expected to be awarded a five-year graphics and video chip supply contract. ATI will be contracted to supply the chips to General Instrument Corp.'s digital set-top cable-TV boxes. The deal assures that ATI's Rage Pro graphics chips will see steady revenues. General Instrument is planning to manufacture up to 15 million set-top boxes for Tele-Communications Inc. ATI will provide the chips for $25 each.

Both companies said they would continue to produce and market DSP chips separately. DSP chips are used in a wide range of devices such as cellular phones and automotive electronics.
