FCC weighs unusual limit on SBC deal

Article Abstract:

The Federal Communications Commission may require SBC Communications Inc. and Ameritech Corp. to offer local telephone and high-speed Internet services outside of their traditional territories in exchange for FCC approval allowing the Baby Bells to merge. Though the companies and the regulatory agency wouldn't comment on details of the possible settlement, SBC has agreed to provide local phone service beyond its market, one of about two dozen conditions imposed on the $78 billion acquisition of Ameritech.

Article Abstract:

The Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are delaying AT & T and British Telecommunications plans for a $10 billion venture that may effect law enforcement and national security. Federal agencies want freedom of access to telecommunication networks for wiretapping services. And ventures with foreign companies provoke concern about monitoring by foreign governments. European regulators have approved the venture. The Federal Communications Commission has finished their review of the deal and the two companies hope they can cement their venture by October.
