AT&T faces hurdle as DSL plans gain speed

Article Abstract:

AT&T wants to provide high-speed Internet access services to the entire US by offering digital subscriber line (DSL) technology. The company recently purchased NorthPoint Communications Group Inc.'s remaining assets toward this end. However, a contract signed earlier in 2001, between AT&T, Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications Inc., prohibits AT&T to offer DSL service in the territories the two cable companies operate in, until June 4, 2006. If the contract is not breached, AT&T will be delayed in offering nationwide DSL service.

AT&T profit warning focuses attention on Excite

Article Abstract:

AT&T has lowered its forecast for third-quarter earnings because it has decided to fold Excite At Home Corp.'s results into its own, a quarter earlier than it had planned. Analysts are wondering about the state of AT&T's broadband strategy and its willingness to take on such a large amount of debt. AT&T maintains that it is 'unwavering' in its support of Excite At Home.
