AT&T to carry NBC's digital-TV programming

Article Abstract:

AT&T Corp. has agreed to carry the cable and broadcast programming of NBC, including an Olympics package and high-definition television signals through 2008. Analysts value the deal at more than $850 million. Most cable firms have not been quick to embrace the technology of high-definition TV signals, generally considering that they demand too many channels. The deal should bolster MSNBC, the network's all-news station, more than doubling the number of AT&T cable homes that receive the service. The deal greatly strengthens MSNBC's market position against CNN, Time-Warner Inc.'s rival all-news cable network. CNN is now distributed to over 70 million households; MSNBC should be in over 66 million homes within three years. AT&T will also continue to carry CNBC, NBC's business-news channel. AT&T recently acquired cable firm Tele-Communications Inc., and has plans to acquire MediaOne Group Inc. Assuming the MediaOne deal goes through, AT&T would have access to over 60% of all households that receive cable in the U.S. The agreement for the Olympics package is a major coup for AT&T. NBC has rights to broadcast the Games through 2008.

Future of ABC's 'Millionaire': multiple choices, astronomical stakes

Article Abstract:

ABC's "Millionaire" game show brings in up to $350,000 per 30 second advertisment, an amount that about covers the production costs of one episode. The producer of the show, Buena Vista Television, is deciding whether to keep the show on ABC, where ratings have soared. Or syndicate the show daily on network affiliates, which would bring in large revenues, but might dilute the show's attraction from over exposure.
