AT&T vows battle to offer local service

Article Abstract:

AT&T plans to begin an intensive battle against local telephone companies to connect directly to local phone customers, offering combinations of local, long-distance and wireless services. AT&T has delayed declaring a local challenge until favorable legislation would help guarantee their profitable entrance into local markets. Local companies control 98% of local services and will make any initial endeavors extremely difficult. AT&T lacks the crucial local switch into homes and businesses, but has increased negotiations with cable companies in the hopes of finding a less-expensive entry into the home market. AT&T is so intent on offering local services that it plans an entire restructuring process that will split the company into an equipment making division, a computers division, and a long-distance, cellular and local service division. The company has also hired consumer marketers and lobbyists to help establish a foothold in the local market.

AT&T names top mangers to lead 3-way breakup

Article Abstract:

AT&T announces that Alex J. Mandl will assume the post of president and chief operating officer of the company's Communications Services division on Jan 1 1997. Mandl, in becoming AT&T's second-highest executive, will govern AT&T's most successful business segment after the corporation dismantles into three separate companies. In a more surprising announcement, existing board member Henry B. Schacht is named to lead AT&T's telecommunications equipment division once it becomes public in 1996. Schacht will work with Network Systems chief Richard A. McGinn to combine the existing telephone gear, microchip, Bell Laboratories, office phone system and network equipment operations into a single operation. Lars Nyberg will continue his stewardship of AT&T's computer division after the separation is complete.
