AT and T move may telegraph new NCR role

AT and T names Jerre Stead, currently head of AT and T's Global Business Communication Systems, as chief executive officer of its NCR Corp subsidiary. Stead, 50, will replace Gilbert Williamson, 55, who is scheduled to retire May 1, 1993. Some AT and T insiders see the appointment of the energetic Stead as part of a plan by AT and T Chmn Robert E. Allen to transform NCR, a computer maker, into a specialist in products that will take advantage of AT and T's strengths in communications technology. Allen has been reportedly frustrated by NCR's reluctance to expand beyond its familiar customer base of retailers and bankers. A communications-oriented NCR would put greater emphasis on multimedia.

AT&T plans to cut or reassign 57% of its computer workers due to merger

Article Abstract:

AT and T will lay off or reassign 4,300, or 57 percent, of the company's 7,500 computer workers. The move is part of AT and T's preparations for its merger with NCR Corp, scheduled for fall 1991. NCR has already started to interview workers who want to transfer to the new, consolidated business. AT and T employees not placed in new jobs will be offered severance packages that depend on years of service. AT and T also offers counseling and job training services.
