AT&T's Bell Labs and Corning Inc. hire over 200 top scientists in Russia

Article Abstract:

AT&T Bell Laboratories Inc and Corning Inc, two top US suppliers of optical communications equipment, have separately hired over 200 Russian scientists to carry out research for them. Bell Labs contracts some 100 scientists from the General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow for a year-long project beginning in June 1992. Corning signed joint research agreements involving over a hundred scientists from the Institute for Silicate Chemistry and the Vavilov State Optical Institute's Optical Materials department, both in St. Petersburg, Russia. Observers note this is a good business move by the two companies. It taps the expertise of a sophisticated research community that not only lacks a commercial market but is also underpaid and threatened by government budget cuts. Bell Labs says the Russian scientists are among the world's leaders in knowledge of the mechanical properties of glass. It also saves money for the US companies, who will pay the scientists the equivalent of from $30 to $60 a month.

AT&T and Viacom are said to plan an elaborate test of interactive TV

Article Abstract:

AT&T will cooperate with Viacom International Inc, the cable television company, to test interactive television services. The tests will involve about 2,000 customers and will take place in Castro Valley, CA. This is the latest in a series of such agreements between cable TV and telephone companies. In May 1993, U S West Inc purchased 25 percent of Time Warner Inc's entertainment division, which includes cable operations. AT&T is already cooperating with Tele-Communications Inc and U S West to test 'video-on-demand,' but the agreement with Viacom will involve more elaborate ranges of interactive services.
