Accounting systems that stand the test of time

Article Abstract:

A cost effective accounting software is one that satisfies the current requirements of its users and can readily adjust to changes in their business and technology requirements. Although the implementation and maintenance of new accounting modules can be very expensive, with a single module costing medium-sized firms between $600,000 and over $1 million over the first five years, most companies evaluate accounting programs in terms of their functional requirements and seldom pay attention to their ability to adapt to future changes. One way that organizations can get the most out of their investments in accounting software is to use one that is based on an object-oriented, component-enabled (OO-C) architecture. OO-C software can be modified easily because it is made up of several modules that can be disassembled and reused.

Stacker 2.0

Article Abstract:

Stacker 2.0 is a file management software package capable of enlarging disk capacity by compressing data before they are stored in the disk and decompressing them upon retrieval. In addition to providing additional storage space, the program has the potential for speeding up computer operation since it has shortened the time required for reading and writing data. Stacker 2.0 runs on an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or on a compatible computer equipped with MS-DOS 3.0. It is quite easy to install, completely safe and compatible with all software packages. The product is available in either hardware or software version from Carlsbad, CA-based firm Stac Electronics. Mail-order prices of the software version are under $90.

The harmony accounting system

Article Abstract:

Open System's Harmony Accounting System, made up of various modules that work together, runs on the IBM XT, AT, or PS-2 computer, requiring at least 512K RAM for the single-user version, a fixed disk and one floppy drive. Module setup is complex, but the system has many options. The Order Entry and Inventory modules are of very good quality, and one of the highlights of the system is its liberal use of the function keys for controlling the system. In general, Harmony Accounting is thoughtfully executed, and well-written.
