Advanced Micro, with legal barriers gone, begins shipping Intel chip clones
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) has begun shipping clones of Intel Corp's 80486 microprocessor. Intel's stock fell $12.25 a share to $97.75 on Apr 19, 1993, while AMD's stock advanced $3.875 per share to $28, as investors feared a price war or loss of market share by Intel. But with demand for 486 chips continuing to far outrun supply, and with AMD's production capacity for the chip severely limited, the move is not expected to have a great impact on either AMD's or Intel's results in 1993. Cyrix Corp has also developed a 486 clone, but has not shipped it in large numbers. Judge William Ingram cleared the way for AMD to enter the market on Apr 16, when he threw out a federal jury verdict that AMD had infringed copyrights of Intel-written microcode for the 486. Ingram ruled that Intel had improperly withheld documents that might have helped AMD present its case better.

Motorola signs up some investors in Iridium satellite phone systems
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc signs up the Brazilian government and United Communications Co of Bangkok, Thailand, for its $3.37 billion Iridium satellite phone system. The Iridium project will launch 66 satellites to set up a global network that will allow mobile phone users to make calls anywhere in the world. Both Brazil and United Communications intend to purchase 5 percent stakes, or a value of about $80 million each, in the project. DDI Corp of Japan, a long-distance telephone carrier, is also reported to be considering investing in Iridium. Motorola has set Dec 15, 1992 as the internal deadline for searching for funders. Analysts are expecting an announcement from the company in early 1993 on whether it has gathered enough investors to proceed with project implementation. Motorola wants the system to be operating in early 1998.

Advanced Micro plans $700 million facility in Texas
Article Abstract:
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) plans to build a $700 million semiconductor manufacturing plant in Austin, TX. The company spent only $137 million of its $1.2 billion in revenue for 1991 on capital expenditures, but executives and analysts alike say the risky expansion is necessary if AMD wants to stay competitive in its field. The Austin facility will manufacture future generations of X86 microprocessors and highly integrated logic chips with 0.5-micron features. Construction on the 45,000-square-foot facility should be completed in 1994 and will be paid for by a combination of debt and equity. The facility will eventually employ 1,000 workers.
