After three-month recess, Microsoft trial resumes

Article Abstract:

Appearing for the U.S., Franklin M. Fisher, an economist from MIT, offered his rebuttal to Microsoft witness Richard L. Schmalensee's analysis of Microsoft marketing practices. Mr. Schmalensee is an economist with the MIT Sloan School of Management. Mr. Schmalensee had said that Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser had a 62 percent marketshare, compared to a 38 percent share for the Netscape Navigator browser, not a monopoly. Mr. Fisher contended that the monopoly wasn't about browsers but operating systems. Microsoft felt threatened because the Netscape browser was becoming a new way for users to find and manipulate data and documents on their computers, and therefore acted to shut Netscape out of that market.

Article Abstract:

CEO William H. Harris of Intuit Inc. testified against Microsoft Corp. today about marketing issues within Windows. He stated that since one had no choice but to use Microsoft's operating system, it was unfair to promote other Microsoft products within this format. People had no choice but to use the software offered on Windows. He was the first witness to suggest solutions to the problem of Windows dominating the marketplace.
