America Online sets Internet alliances

America Online Inc announced in Mar 1996 that it will give discounts to users of AT&T's WorldNet service. It also negotiated a deal with Netscape Communications Corp to distribute the Web browser Netscape Navigator. Microsoft's Internet Explorer will become the firm's primary browser.

IBM issues hostile bid for Lotus

Article Abstract:

IBM tried to improve its position in the personal-computer market by making a $3.3-billion offer for Lotus Development Corp. The move caused Lotus' stock price to rise 89% between June 4, 1995, and June 5, 1995. IBM's stock fell $2.50 per share during that same period.

Microsoft abandons deal with Intuit

Article Abstract:

Microsoft decided not to follow through with its proposed acquisition of Intuit because of expected further litigation related to Microsoft's antitrust suit filed by the federal government. The $2 billion deal raised further questions about unfair competition.
