Ameritech plans to spend $1.05 to modernize and speed up its network

Article Abstract:

Ameritech plans a $1.5 billion upgrade of its telecommunications networks. Industry observers say that this sort of an upgrade is critical for Bell telephone companies if they are to stay competitive with local telecommunications services companies. Ameritech has outlined a five-year plan involving its five telephone company subsidiaries in the Great Lakes region. Exchanges will be modernized and 276 new digital switches will be installed. The project will be completed in 1996. By then, Ameritech estimates that about 13 million of its 16.4 million customer lines will have a digital capability. This represents a considerable acceleration. Previously, Ameritech had planned about nine million digital lines during the next five years. Ameritech's stock closed up 62.5 cents on Tuesday, Nov 12, 1991, at $63.375.

GTE, Baby Bells issue challenge to Cellular One

Article Abstract:

GTE Corp, together with Ameritech Corp, Bell Atlantic Corp and Nynex Corp, plan a national cellular service that will compete with Cellular One, the joint venture that was established by Southwestern Bell Corp and McCaw Cellular Communications Inc in spring 1991. Cellular One standardizes its services by licensing companies that provide local services according to Cellular One's requirements. The GTE-Bell group wants to establish a standardized nationwide service that improves on the Cellular One arrangement by building a flexible system that is easier and simpler to use. Pacific Telesis Group and BellSouth Corp are said to be interested in the GTE-Bell plan and may join the project.
