An examination of opportunistic action within research alliances: evidence from the biotechnology industry

Article Abstract:

The utilization of relational contracts in the research and development process is used as the take off point in the establishment of an explanatory model of opportunism deterrents in relational contracts. Potential deterrents include the strength of the contract, communication frequency, the backgrounds of the partners and the number of alliances. The model is tested using 109 research alliances in the biotechnology industry.

The impact of firm-specific capabilities on the amount of capital raised in an initial public offering: evidence from the biotechnology industry

Article Abstract:

A study aimed at testing a model of the total amount of capital that can be generated by a biotechnology firm's initial public offering (IPO) is presented. Results of the study show a significant relationship between the total amount of capital that can be raised and the firm's location, the number of products it has in development, and the scientific capabilities of the firm.
