An integer programming model for locating vehicle emissions testing stations

Article Abstract:

The maximum permissible arrival rates of different-sized vehicle emissions testing stations are determined through simulation. For the study, the station location problem is formulated as a set covering model. Different solutions are obtained through sensitivity analysis, with both the average waiting time and maximum distance constraints varied at certain points. Results show that the integer programming solution cuts the objective function by at least $3 million, as compared to the configuration currently being used in Connecticut stations. The present configuration has more testing stations than what the integer programming solution recommends but are not as effectively distributed as the integer programming approach. Therefore, the integer programming solution can help in determining the appropriate number, size and locations of stations.

Control of a stochastic production system with estimated parameters

Article Abstract:

Mathematical models for estimating production and inventory needs and production are presented. A system using proportional restoration rules works for controlling production even when initial estimates are grossly inaccurate.
