Arafat opens PNA Council; terrorism issue dampens moods

Article Abstract:

Arafat addressed the inaugural session of the 88-member Palestine Legislative Council on Mar 7, 1996, held in Gaza City, and vowed to continue the peace process. The proceedings were overshadowed by increased tensions with Israel due to recent suicide bombings against Israel.

Gaza Islamic leader assassinated in Malta

Article Abstract:

Fathi al-Shiqaqi, leader of the Islamic Jihad, was assassinated on Oct 26, 1995, in Sliema, Malta. The group accused Israel of masterminding the assassination, but Israel did not confirm this. Peace talks between Hamas and the Palestinian National Authority continue.
