Asia makes eastern Europe look greener

Article Abstract:

Australia is investigating the economic opportunities in eastern Europe as the Asian economic downturn continues in 1998. Gross domestic product growth rates reach more than 5% in many countries, labor costs are low and privatization opportunities are many. Poland, the largest regional economy except for Poland, has attracted investment from Lend Lease, Boral, Pacific Dunlop, Amartil, Amcor and Southcorp, since 1990.

Open-market veteran plans to stay in Asia

Article Abstract:

Andrew Leeming joined Hong Kong-based Peregrine investment bank in Jun 1997. The bank filed for liquidation on Jan 12, 1998. It had a $400 million exposure in Suharto family-associated Steady Safe, a taxi company. The brokerage division, the corporate finance division and the derivative division are solvent and up for sale. Leeming wants to remain in Asia.
