Austerity plan to help East proposed

Article Abstract:

The German government on Jan 19, 1993, revealed a broad economic plan including benefit cuts and tax increases developed to provide funds to help the failing economy of the former East Germany. The plan, championed by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, came at at time when Germany was near a recession.

Sweeping economic reforms unveiled

Article Abstract:

A 50-point, economic stimulation plan was unveiled by German Economics Minster Guenter Rexrodt on Jan 30, 1996. The plan calls for tax cuts, investment incentives and reductions in government spending. The plan was produced in collaboration with the French government.

Germany: Kohl announces massive welfare cuts

Article Abstract:

Kohl announced on Apr 26, 1996, sweeping spending cuts of public welfare programs as a means for reducing the country's budget deficit by $50 billion marks. The measures will be implemented without the support of Germany's employers' federations and trade unions.
