Aznar lacks majority in parliament

Article Abstract:

The Popular Party beat the ruling Socialist Party in the general elections in Spain on Mar 3, 1996. However, Aznar's party failed to capture an absolute majority in the parliament. The PP had hoped to form a coalition government with the support of smaller parties.

Gonzalez wins fourth term as Spanish premier

Spanish Premier Felipe Gonzalez was reelected on Jun 6, 1993. Gonzalez's Socialist Workers Party won 159 seats in the lower house of parliament, and the People's Party gained 141 seats.

Opposition wins parliament majority
