Barnesandnoble.com to join a crowd of firms offering 'online music stores'

Article Abstract:

Barnesandnoble.com Inc. is launching an "online music store" where consumers may purchase sound recordings over the Internet. With estimated online sales market-wide of $374 million for 1999 to $2.5 billion by 2003, Barnesandnoble.com will be competing against such established book and music retailers as Amazon.com, CD-Now Inc., Borders Group Inc. and Tower Records. Executives believe that their service will be the best, featuring classical and jazz music, steep discounts, music- related products, independent reviews and music samples. Company officials also purchased 4.5 million shares in the new venture, with the price rising to $17.25. Parent Barnes and Noble shares fell 31.25 cents in trading.
