Batch construction heuristics and storage assignment strategies for walk/ride and pick systems

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the forward picking system to retrieve items stored in warehouses. The research specifically considered a batch selecting system where multiple pickers travel down warehouse aisles to retrieve batches of customer orders. Results of the study have significant ramifications for the management of warehouses using the batch picking approach. They suggest that the marginal productivity of the work force and, therefore, the ability of management to respond to fluctuating demand levels, are substantially influenced by the storage assignment strategy, level of order structure and batch construction heuristic employed. They also suggest that there is a huge potential for further performance improvements through reductions in idle time.

Restructurable representations of negotiation

Article Abstract:

Negotiation is a process that involves decision-making, with the negotiating parties compromising in order to reach a settlement. The changes in how the negotiators perceive the problem under negotiation, which can result in the willingness to make concessions, are influenced by problem representation. A restructurable representation of negotiation is discussed as well as its applications for decision analysis and support.
