Behind the green line

Article Abstract:

Accountants have to report on sustainability in a way that these reports can be compared. It is time consuming and costly. Primarily, these reports indicate the corporate responsibilities beyond the age old concept of "maximizing shareholder returns". Issues like care for environment and heritage fall under this category. Even though such reporting started almost 15 years ago, many investors are not sure of their accuracy or value.

Green-letter law

Article Abstract:

Climate changes are the major world-wide environmental concern, but only thirty five of Australia's largest companies have responded to a legal notice by law firm Maurice Blackburn Cashman that they could be sued if they failed to reduce green-house gas emissions. This green-letter law threat was imposed on behalf of the environmental group Climate Action Network Australia (CANA).

Kyoto still under a cloud

Article Abstract:

Russia's President, Vladimir Putin is indecisive on approving Kyoto Protocol on greenhouse gas emissions. The effect of the approval, if takes place, in the context of Australian businesses is discussed. The European Union (EU) trading scheme on carbon emissions scheduled to begin on January 1, 2005 will follow irrespective of Kyoto's approval.
