Northern Telecom is set to unveil fiber-optic line

Article Abstract:

Northern Telecom Ltd unveils its FiberWorld family of fiber-optic switching and transmission products. FiberWorld products are based on synchronous optical networking (Sonet), which is a new international standard for fiber-optic telecommunications equipment. Northern Telecom's products will improve the speed and quality of voice and data transmissions, quadrupling the capacity of a fiber-optic strand. Such products clear the way for telcos to put picture phones into homes and bring studio-quality video to businesses. Being first with Sonet-based products, Northern Telecom hopes to establish itself in a market potentially estimated at $5 billion. The company's new products will appear over 18 months beginning early in 1990.

IBM, BellSouth to conduct 3-year study of high-speed networking technologies

Article Abstract:

IBM and BellSouth Corp's BellSouth Services unit announce they will work together on a three-year study to research and develop products and services involving high-speed data communications. The research will center around IBM's 'Paris' packet-switching technology, for transmitting voice, data, image and multimedia information. Paris technology uses Synchronous Optical Network techniques that produce throughput of up to 622M-bps. The companies plan to test different applications of the high-speed technology to determine which will be valuable in real world situations. The companies say they have not decided what applications will be tested, but field tests will begin by the end of 1991.
