Barnes & Noble takes on Borders

Article Abstract:

Barnes & Nobles Booksellers, based in Westbury, CT, will open a 30,000-sq-ft store at the commercial strip of US 202 in Brandywine Hundred, MS, making another offensive against Borders Books & Music, which has a store around a mile away from Barnes & Nobles' store. The new store, which will have 60 employees, will be located adjacent to the Concord Mall, giving it access to shoppers who are from Pennsylvania and are looking for a better deal in Delaware. In addition, the store would also target shoppers of Borders in New Castle County.

Shops feel heat from Home Depot

Article Abstract:

Home Depot's planned entry into the Glasgow, DE, market is expected to produce adverse effects towards smaller hardware operators. Small family stores may be driven out of business due to the enormous size and merchandise volume of Home Depot, according to analysts. Industry observers point out that national chains such as Home Depot, can monopolize the market because they can easily lower their prices to stifle competition. Home Depot plans to start construction of the proposed store by the later part of May 1998.
