Acquisitions and other factors have made investors interested in the biotechnology industry in the year 2001. However, there is pressure to keep pharmaceutical costs low and budgets have been slashed on an international basis. The industry is expected to see a tough operating environment for the next several years.

Stocks in the biotechnology industry have fallen in the 3rd qtr of the year 2001, along with the general market. The industry has also begun to include many small, independent research and development firms. Investors need to be cautious when selecting equities in this sector.
