Bridging behavioral and economic theories of decline: organizational inertia, strategic competition, and chronic failure

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze organizational decline using a model that embodies arguments from several economic and organizational perspectives. The framework allowed the identification of several causes for chronic failure, including cost inefficiency, strategic competition and organizational inertia. Strategies were modeled based on quantities associated with beliefs about the quantity strategies of rival firms while organizational failure conditions were defined by cost and asymmetries. Results indicated that modeling managers' decisions about investments, mergers and corporate growth may benefit strategic management research. They also suggested that loss constraints can be represented by institutional ties rather than being fixed to zero or infinite.

Rankings from round-robin tournaments

Article Abstract:

In the December 1983 issue of Management Science, Stephen Goddard objected to the usual technique for ranking teams in a round-robin tournament. Goddard believes that rankings based on number of team wins is not as fair as the technique he devises, which attempts to weight team opponents and give higher rankings for upset victories achieved. The Goddard technique is argued against, and the number of victories technique is advocated by the statistical analysis presented. Various ranking methods are briefly discussed, including rankings by scores.

Game theory and cost allocation problems

Article Abstract:

Joint cost allocation problems can be caused in a reasonable manner by the various practical situations that people get into when they attempt to work together to increase cost savings. Methods for cost allocation are based on game theory concepts based on the strategic elements of cost allocation environments. The article covers cost allocation techniques based on the Shapley value, the gap allocation technique, and on the nucleolus.
