Building-materials big four show signs of real promise

Australia's four largest building materials companies, Boral, CSR, James Hardie and Pioneer, are enacting plans to better their market positions. Strategies include diversifying, selling assets, varying domestic and international exposures, restructuring operations and changing management. Other possibilities include overseas niche markets, product innovation and heightened customer service.

RBAEs fragile independence

The Reserve Bank of Australia's independence from the Federal Government is important in making tough decisions on monetary policies, without having to worry about the popularity of these decisions. They should follow the lead taken by the U.K. Government in overhauling the 'Bank of England'.
