Building top management muscle in a slow growth environment - how different is better at Greyhound Financial Corporation

Article Abstract:

Greyhound Financial Corp's 'muscle building' program allows for management growth amid the nation's economic crisis. The recession of the 1980s has led to massive lay-offs even ofmanagement executives. Those retained had to contend with salary cuts and diminished promotion opportunities resulting in low morale. The 'muscle building' program at Greyhound consists of job swapping among the company's high potential managers to prevent management stagnation. It provides opportunities for top executives to satisfy their ambitions and maintain their interest in the company.

Teaching Big Brother to be a team player: computer monitoring and quality

Article Abstract:

Hughes Aircraft Company operates a successful computer monitoring system which allows quality control and production strategies to be integrated without adversely affecting the quality of life at work for employees. An effective computer monitoring system should gather data that can be used to compare specific tasks, collect data that the workers believe will help them, and be used to give employees feedback data rather than for collecting social information. Computer monitoring should be used to develop workers and improve their performance rather than punish them.
