Busier and busier signals: added telephone traffic forces more area codes, more confusion, more costs

Article Abstract:

The increase in telecommunications equipment and usage means carriers must add more area codes to handle the new telephone numbers. Computer modems, cellular telephones and fax modems all require new telephone lines, and the number of available telephone numbers is dwindling. Beginning in Sep 1995, telecommunications carriers will announce 16 new area codes in a 16-month period, the most codes ever introduced in similar period of time since area codes were widely adopted. The changes mean that businesses must reprogram or replace their PBX equipment. Over 40% of existing private equipment has not been updated to recognize the new area codes, which no longer have an '0' or a '1' in the middle. Of the unaltered PBXs, a third only need to be reconfigured, while two-thirds need software or need to be replaced. Observers estimate that by the year 2025, all American telephone numbers will need to use a four-digit area code.

Many reported unready to face Year 2000 bug

Article Abstract:

Many businesses and government agencies worldwide are not taking proper measures to prepare for the year 2000 transition, according to the Gartner Group. The survey measured the progress of 2,300 companies, institutions and government agencies in 17 nations. The study reported that 30% of the companies have not begun year 2000 compliance, with 88% of these consisting of smaller companies with less than 2,000 employees. By comparison, 52% of companies worldwide with more than 20,000 were evaluated as well positioned. Although 80% of large US companies are well positioned, according to the survey, they could be impacted by their growing dependence on smaller suppliers that may not achieve year 2000 compliance. A recent House information technology subcommittee assigned Ds or Fs to 11 of 24 Government agencies in their year 2000 preparation. Observers say year 2000 failures could trigger a global recession.

Boeing in deal with Union on the 737

Article Abstract:

The Boeing Corp. has reached an agreement with the International Association of Machinists, which represents 39,000 Boeing workers, as part of its plans for building the 737 commercial jet at the former McDonnell Douglas complex in Long Beach, California. The labor agreement does not preclude layoffs of workers at Boeing, which is planning to eliminate between 18,000 and 28,000 employees by the end of 1999. The agreement also includes a provision capping production of the popular aircraft at five per month.
