Businesses eye postal rate plan

Article Abstract:

The US Postal Service (USPS) intends to revamp its rate structure to reduce costs to firms that comply with the USPS's automation rules. Prices for some other bulk mail may rise. The Postal Rate Commission is expected to make its recommendations by Jan 1996. Tips for businesses on reducing mail costs are provided.

Postal increases: smaller is better

Article Abstract:

Proposed postal rate increases would average 4.5% with first class letter going from 32 cents to 33 cents. Express mail would drop from $15 for two lbs to $14.95. The changes would start in mid-1998. The Postal Service agrees not to ask for a raise in first class mail for another two years.

Postal changes raise the stakes

Article Abstract:

The Jul 1996 postal changes will offer incentives to businesses to prepare mail that can be processed rapidly and cheaply. Postal Service business centers will provide help to small firms on cutting mailing costs. Software and presort bureaus are two options for small business.
