Buyer to revive 2 popular on-line magazines

Article Abstract:

Zapata will announce today the acquisition of popular on-line magazines Word and Charged from Icon CMT for an undisclosed amount. Icon CMT discontinued Word and Charged in Mar 1998, saying they did not fit the company's core business as a network services provider, but Zapata CEO Avram A. Glazer said his company would rehire both magazines' employees. Houston-based Zapata, a food processing business, also said it will change its name to Zap as part of what Glazer described as a 'radical transformation.' Glazer said Zap plans to devote a significant number of resources to acquire Internet and electronic-commerce companies. Icon CMT also will provide network communications to Zap, and the companies reached an agreement on a multimillion-dollar, four-year deal, according to Icon CMT Chmn and CEO Scott A. Baxter.

Bloomberg to supply AOL with on-line business data; news provider broadens its consumer reach

Article Abstract:

Bloomberg L.P. will announce that it is paying America Online (AOL) to be a featured business information provider. Financial terms of the partnership were undisclosed, but the deal signals continued confidence in on-line consumer markets. AOL's 'anchor tenancies,' in which news or entertainment services appear on its opening screen, frequently cost millions of dollars. By comparison, AOL formerly paid Dow Jones for its business information. AOL says its users look up 60 million stock quotes daily and track six million portfolios, which represents a 70% increase over 1997. Bloomberg, an employer of 700 reporters in 80 international bureaus, has been seeking to widen its consumer reach. Bloomberg's financial news and information will begin to reach AOL's reported 11 million customers later this week.

Compaq buys Zip2 to enhance Altavista; purchaser hopes its search engine site will catch up to rivals

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp. acquired Zip2 Corp. as part of an attempt to make its Internet search engine, AltaVista, more competitive. In addition, Compaq acquired Internet commerce site Shopping.com, and will integrate it into AltaVista to create a one-stop site for online information and shopping.
